David Eckert

David Eckert received a Bachelor of Music Education degree in 1981 and a Master of Science Education in 1983 from Northern State (College) University. During that time he studied voice and conducting with Dr. John Berggren.

He has been employed as the Cultural Arts Supervisor for the City of Aberdeen Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department since 1983. He oversees the Aberdeen Recreation and Cultural Center (ARCC) and a wide variety of arts programs including ARCC visual arts classes, ARCC Dance program, Storybook Land Theatre Company and Aberdeen Municipal Band.

David has served on various community boards and ad hoc committees including the following:
Aberdeen Area Arts Council - 1983 to present
Aberdeen Community Theatre - 1984 to 1994
Aberdeen Area Chamber of Commerce Cultural Affairs
Committee - 1983 to 1988
Aberdeen Community Concert Association Board - 1985 to 1988

He also served on the steering committee that developed the Aberdeen Community Cultural Plan in 2000-01.

In 1991 David received the Friend of the Arts Award from the Aberdeen Area Arts Council for outstanding support of the arts in Aberdeen. The Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department has received a number of awards during David's tenure, including the 2009 Governor's in the Arts for Outstanding Support in the Arts by an Organization or Business. Under David's supervision, the Department has also received three national awards for arts programs from the National Recreation and Parks Association.

David has been the choir director at First Baptist Church in Aberdeen since 1984, and in 1993 he added the responsibility of song leader. In 2004 he became the Minister of Music, overseeing all music at First Baptist.

In 1988 he directed the Ellendale, ND Community Choir and Orchestra performances of "Messiah". David has also conducted the choir and orchestra of the Aberdeen Community Living Christmas Tree annually since 1990.
